AI in education faces the risk of becoming an "answer engine." Instead of encouraging students to reflect, many tools provide ready-made solutions, solving math problems, writing essays, or generating code with a single prompt. This shortcut may appear convenient, but it undermines genuine learning and leaves students unprepared for future problem-solving. With that being said, we believe the defining rule of AI in the classroom should be simple: AI must never explain everything outright, and it must never simply give the final answer.
Instead, it should teach. That means asking guiding questions, nudging students toward their own discoveries, and forcing them to engage with the material rather than copy-paste a solution.
Educational research is clear: students learn best when they wrestle with problems themselves. A large-scale meta-analysis across STEM courses showed that active learning where students are actively solving, retrieving, and reasoning leads to significantly higher performance than passively receiving information. The science of “desirable difficulties” also tells us that a little struggle is good.
When students have to think hard before arriving at an answer, they remember it longer and understand it better. If AI tools do the opposite: solving equations, writing essays, or coding assignments outright, students bypass the very process that creates real understanding. They may get good grades on a worksheet, but they leave without the mental muscle to solve new problems. In other words, AI becomes a shortcut, not a coach.
A writing student uploads a draft essay. Rather than rewriting paragraphs, the AI highlights a section and asks: “Which of these sentences is your evidence, and which is your commentary?” The student has to label and refine, learning to distinguish argument from support.
A computer science student requests a code solution. Instead of generating the entire script, the AI asks for a docstring a short description of the program’s inputs and outputs. Only after the student writes it does the AI suggest test cases.
Unfortunately, many AI tools in circulation today are designed as answer engines. Apps that scan a homework problem and spit out step-by-step solutions may look impressive, but they short-circuit the very act of learning. It’s the equivalent of showing students the answers to the test before they’ve studied.
Without safeguards, universities risk raising a generation of students who know how to prompt AI, but not how to think critically themselves. That’s why the right design philosophy is essential: AI must act as a teacher, not a solver.
