Grafari

Teach a class where every child is at a different stage of spelling.

Grafari (Orthograph) works out which spelling step a child has not yet mastered, with dyslexia or not, and keeps them on it until it is secure.

Build spelling from the sound up

Grafari (Orthograph) is a spelling program used from the first year of school through to adulthood. It turns each word into a sequence of colors, sounds, and shapes, so the brain can link what a child hears to what a child writes.

A learner moves on only once a skill is secure. That is what makes the gains hold on words the learner has never practiced.

Each letter carries its own color and tone, so letters that look alike stop blurring into each other.

Dictation with support

Learners write words they hear, with color, shape, and sound as scaffolding, and prompts that lead them to correct themselves.

Progress learners can see

Learners see how far they have come, which keeps motivation up and gives them something to reflect on.

Raise spelling outcomes, lower your workload

Multisensory learning

Color, sound, shape, and structure give the brain more than one route to the same word.

Measured learning gains

Studies show significant progress, including for learners with dyslexia. Learners practice independently, so teachers get more time for one-to-one support.

Individual learning paths

Grafari reads each learner’s error pattern and sets the next task. Teachers configure nothing.

Automatic progress analysis

One-click learning reports, class overviews, and per-learner error analysis fit straight into teaching or intervention, with no extra prep.

See where every learner stands

Coach is the teacher’s view of Grafari. Check progress, manage groups, adjust learning settings, and see which learners need support and on which skill.

See how one school uses Grafari every day

Grundschule Wesendorf in Lower Saxony works with a very mixed intake and a shortage of teachers. Grafari runs there every day, in units of 12 to 15 minutes inside the lesson. By Easter of grade 1, more than half the class had completed all the letter sounds and were practicing phonetically accurate writing, a level normally reached in the autumn of grade 2.

“In the programs, the children are making greater progress than I am teaching. That is something I can say with confidence.” Frauke Simanek, class teacher and learning therapist, after more than 30 years of teaching.

The school uses Grafari alongside Calcularis for math. The interview is in German.

See what schools ask most

Which age group is Grafari for?

Grafari (Orthograph) is suitable for learners from the first year of school through to adulthood. In a school that covers the whole primary range and any older learners who still need spelling support.

Which languages does Grafari cover?

Grafari trains a core vocabulary of about 8,000 high-frequency English words, organized by spelling pattern, and further languages can be practiced. It also suits learners working in English as a second or foreign language.

How long should learners practice, and how often?

Twenty minutes at a time, three times a week. For the training to take effect, keep that up for at least three months.

Who developed Grafari?

Neuroscientists and computer scientists at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. The method has been tested in peer-reviewed studies with children who have dyslexia and children who do not.

How do we set up accounts and licenses?

Administrators create teacher and learner accounts in Institution Management, then assign licenses in Coach. The Schools Coach Guide gives step-by-step instructions and a video walkthrough.

Can we assign one module to a single learner?

Yes. In Coach, open Learning settings, select the learner, select Grafari, then choose the module from the Global settings menu and save.

Is Grafari only for learners with dyslexia?

No. Studies show significant progress for learners with dyslexia, and the same adaptive path serves a mixed-ability class. After each answer Grafari repeats what is still shaky and skips what is secure.

Does it work on our school devices?

Yes. Grafari runs in the browser on PCs, laptops, Chromebooks, and tablets, with nothing to install.

What does Grafari cost?

Licenses are priced per learner and the price differs by country. Tell us your school and country and we will send a quote.
