Solenthaler, Klingler, Käser & Gross (2018). Ten Years of Research on Intelligent Educational Games for Learning Spelling and Mathematics. arXiv:1806.03257, 7 June 2018.
This article looks back at ten years of research at ETH Zurich on intelligent educational games for children with developmental dyslexia and dyscalculia.
The authors describe the shared architecture behind Orthograph (today Grafari) and Calcularis: a multimodal representation that reroutes information about letters and numbers through visual, auditory, colour, and topological cues, combined with a machine-learning student model that adapts every task to the individual child.
Drawing on training data from more than 20,000 children at Swiss schools and at home, the paper presents the data-driven analytics that make the personalised, fear-free learning environment of both programs possible. Solenthaler, Klingler, Käser and Gross, arXiv:1806.03257, 2018.
